(A young boy – the young prince Hamlet – is sitting in a sandbox, playing with toys, including a shovel. The court jester, Yorick, enters.)

YORICK: There’s my little man! How you doing, pal?

HAMLET (excited to see Yorick): You’re back!

YORICK: In the flesh! (He makes a silly face). Boogety-boogety-boogety!

(Hamlet laughs. Yorick makes another silly face).

You like that? Boogety-boogety-boo!

(Hamlet laughs.)

HAMLET: Where you been? I’ve missed you.

YORICK: Oh, just resting my weary bones. Comedy’s hard work, you know. (He makes another silly face and noise.) Boogety-woogety who!

HAMLET: Tell me a funny story! Tell me a funny story!

YORICK (thinking): A funny story? Hmm. How about this: I’ve got something better than a funny story.

HAMLET (excited): What?

YORICK (bending down): Here, get on my back. I’ll give you a ride.

HAMLET: Yay!

YORICK: All right? You on there good? Hold on tight now.

HAMLET: Giddy up!

(Yorick carries Hamlet around on his back. Yorick makes horse sounds. Hamlet laughs and shouts and slaps Yorick as if he’s whipping a horse.)

Giddy up! Giddy up go! Giddy up!

(Hamlet mistakenly hits Yorick’s head.)

YORICK (stopping abruptly): Ow!

HAMLET: Sorry!

(Yorick puts Hamlet down, and rubs his head.)

YORICK: You almost cracked my skull there.

HAMLET: Sorry.

YORICK: OK, new rule: You can ride, but no hitting, dig it?

HAMLET: Dig it!

YORICK: OK, back on.

(Hamlet crawls back onto Yorick’s back. Servant enters.)

SERVANT: Yorick! Yorick? There you are. I’ve been looking all over the castle for you. The king wants you, and boy is he in a bad mood over that whole Norway business. I sure hope you can cheer him up.

(Yorick puts Hamlet down.)

YORICK: Sorry, sport. Duty calls.

HAMLET: Aww.

YORICK: I’ll catch you later, OK?

HAMLET (sadly): OK.

YORICK: Dig it?

HAMLET: Dig it.

YORICK (To the servant): All right, let’s go.

(Servant and Yorick exit. Hamlet returns to his sandbox, digging with the shovel. Lights fade out.)
