Henry and Julie

(Running time: Approx 1.5 minutes)

Staging note: Two people on stage, two other people out of sight just off stage, making a lot of noise. One of them sticks out her head onstage at the end of the bit.

(There is no furniture)

LIGHTS UP

(Henry and July have just walked onstage. During their dialogue, faint lovemaking sounds start to be heard from another couple out of sight just offstage. These sounds rapidly grow in intensity.)

HENRY

You know, Julie, when we had our first date three years ago, I said to myself, God, I’m the luckiest man in the world to be going out with a beautiful angel like you.

JULIE

Oh, Henry, that’s so sweet of you

HENRY

I love that shy little smile of yours, the way that you look at me with those soft brown eyes, I love you Julie… (Henry makes a move to kiss her, but she dodges him.)

JULIE

I love you too, Henry. I love the way that you listen to me when I talk about my problems. I love the way that I can turn to you when I need help. You are the sweetest, most caring man that I know.

(She takes one of his hands in both of hers. Offstage the lovemaking sounds are building up to a frenzied, epic intensity, complete with ass-slapping sounds and very loud moans and groans. Henry makes another move to kiss Julie, but she drops his hand and pulls away.)

JULIE

It’s just, that, I’m not ready to love you in that way. I love you as a dear, dear, friend, but I’m not ready for anything more than that. I hope you understand. Anyway, thanks for driving me home, and maybe we can get together Monday after prayer meeting.

HENRY

Well, I’ll see you Monday then. Until then…

(Henry takes one of her hands in both of his, then he lets go. He exits the stage on the opposite direction of the lovemaking sounds. As soon as she leaves, the lovemaking noises stop and a woman sticks her head onstage.)

WOMAN

Hey, Julie! Mike wants to know if you would like to join us in a threesome.

JULIE

O.K. (She starts to unbutton her blouse as she heads backstage.)
