"Focus Farm"
by Mike Rothschild
LIGHTS UP. SAM is sitting at a table, writing in a notebook. Beat. DAVE walks in.
sam
Hey, Dave.
Dave
What's up? How's the writing going?
SAM
Pretty bad. I can't focus. I just need some quiet so I can concentrate.
DAVE
Sure, there's so many distractions these days, with the internet and DVD's...
SAM
Yeah, peace and quiet is what I need.
DAVE
...people always calling you about some stupid shit, they never shut up...
Pause. Sam glares at Dave.
DAVE (CONT'D)
Sorry. Are there places where writers can go to work without distraction?
SAM
Retreats, yeah.
DAVE
That's what you need. A place you can go to focus and concentrate on your work.
SAM
Yeah, somewhere isolated and alone, away from the hustle and bustle.
DAVE
A retreat where you can focus on really getting down to business.
SAM
Nothing to do but write in total one-ness with nature.
DAVE
A writer's retreat.
SAM
A focus farm.
DAVE
A concentration camp.
Pause. Sam glares at him hard.
daVE (CONT'D)
A camp...where you could go to concentrate. What? Oh.
Pause.
DAVE (CONT'D)
It's better than "focus farm".
SAM
That's horrible. Get out!
Dave leaves.
sam (CONT'D)
Stupid jackass.
Sam looks at his writing carefully and sighs.
SAM (CONT'D)
Who knew writing "Mein Kampf 2" would be so hard?
BLACKOUT.
"Focus Farm" debuted March 7, 2003, performed by Nic de Armendi, Mike Rothschild.
