The Voice of Authority Part I
By Sean Nitchmann
Spotlight on narrator
I am the voice of authority.
You will heed my instructions.
When I tell you what’s what, what will be what what is.
Though you may disagree, it will no longer matter,
Once the voice of authority has been heard.
The voice of authority is a pan’s flute calling to the sheep.
The masses will flock behind the voice of authority,
Nodding their heads, parroting and mimicking, creating a great din,
So that the voice of authority is louder and stronger than all dissenting voices,
Ringing throughout the land, exiling all those who dare to speak against it.
Against me, the voice of authority
I know what you need, I was once like you.
Cast aside your doubts, your idle skepticism, your impotent belief systems.
They’ll only complicate your life and distract you.
Free yourself from the confines of responsibility and consequence,
I am the voice of authority, just let me do the talking for you
You think you can resist me, you tell yourself you will not sway from your resolve.
You say you have truth on your side.
I have battled the voice of reason, and I have prevailed.
I creep in to your psyche, close in on you from the periphery
I am your insidious second thought and eventually I will speak your mind
And when I do, you’ll say you saw it on TV, read it in a book, a magazine, the paper, heard it on the radio, learned it in class, attended a lecture, got it from a panel of experts, a professional, somebody at work, your dad, or maybe it came in a vision or a sign from the Gods.
It doesn’t matter because the voice of authority will overcome any obstacle you set forth.
I will gnaw at your soul until you give in, give in and become my mouthpiece, my puppet.
I will have my have my hand, my strong arm of authority up your ass, moving your jaw, forming the words with your mouth, and you’ll believe every stilted syllable that slides from your tainted tongue
And we will be as one. We will meld into one quaking mass spewing forth facts, opinions, concepts, verbiage, banter, showering our doe eyed audience with the illustrious wisdoms we have deemed them worthy of receiving. And with every repetition of your little persiflage I will fade deeper into the shadowy recesses of your memory until I no longer exist, because you…
Stage lights out - audience lights up
Have become… the voice of authority.
