BRASS LINK episode nine (9)

in a line at the back of the stage:

OTIS, SANDI, JAVERT, DEPUTY, and ZACK, ROY, AXEL, VERA.

each of them stands facing front, heads bowed, right arm in the air, except the four one-armers whose left arms are held up. they are wax.

Downstage, the THIEF and his CHILD.

child. Daddy, I don’t understand.

thief. Now, hush, now and let me tell you the story.

child. But why are the forces of light chasing?

thief. Are you going to let me tell you the story or not?

child. Okay.

thief. Okay. ...Then the forces of darkness wanted to destroy me.

child. But why, Daddy?

thief. The forces of darkness wanted to destroy me because they saw that the forces of light were trying to destroy me, so they thought it was a trick and I was really on the side of light, but that the light side wanted the dark side to think I was on their side so I could infiltrate them, but really I wasn’t on any side, I just wanted to get to Mount Vernon.

child. It was like they psyched each other out.

thief. Yes, they psyched each other out and so all the powers of light and darkness wanted to destroy me.

child. But I still don’t understand, why did th forces of light want to destroy you in the first place.

thief. Because I was at the scene of the murder.

child. But you didn’t kill Mike O’Malley.

thief. No, but there was also the one armed man, Otis who was in the truck with me.

child. But you didn’t kill him either.

thief. No, but I was also driving a stolen truck.

child. But you only stole the truck so you could get to Mount Vernon to save Mommy.

thief. Right.

child. So why did the forces of light want to destroy you? I thought they were the good guys.

thief. No, you weren’t listening ot the story. There aren’t any good guys, except for your Daddy. Look at the forces of light: an escaped mental patient disguised as a deputy, a cop with a warped sense of justice, a sex starved bimbo, and a man possessed by the ghost of Mike O’Malley who was himself possessed by a magic loaf of bread. See, they’re just as bad as the powers of darkness. There aren’t any good guys or bad gusy, just light and darkness.

child. This is a very confusing story.

thief. But it’s mostly true. Now can I finish?

child. But, Daddy, if there are no good guys and no bad guys, why do we have all these wax figures in our basement?

thief. Shut the fuck up and let me finish the story.

otis. Forces of darkness, Beware!

OTIS kills THIEF with the bread

(clubs him over the head)

AUTHOR'S NOTES:
This episode was actually written by Jeff Goode
Brass Link was a No Shame serial created by Sean Clark and Jeff Goode. The two writers alternated episodes with no pre-planning of the direction of the series. Each new episode required the current writer to pick up wherever the other had left off. Recurring roles were usually played by the same actors from week-to-week, though the part of Roger, notably, was played by three different actors.
