Episode three

Mike and Farmer in the pick-up, Mike’s loaf of bread at his side.

MIKE. (singing) Off to find America
The land I know and love
Nothin’ but a loaf of bread
And blue sky up above

FARMER. Here we are.

MIKE. Oelwein!

FARMER. Love it or leave it.

MIKE. It’s just exactly like I pictured it.

FARMER. (gasps horribly and stands bolt upright)

MIKE. What’s wrong?!

FARMER. Oh, nothin’. Chest pains. I get ‘em from time to time. Well, looky there. I think I see my favorite waitress is workin’ over ‘t the diner.

MIKE. Well, thanks for the ride. I’ll be seeing you.

FARMER. Say, why don’t you join me for one last cup o’ java before you hit the road, son?

MIKE. Okay! I’ll be right there.

Farmer exits to diner.

Mike takes a deep breath of that good clean Iowa air, and exhales: Ah!

During this next line, the thief enters, breaks into the pick-up truck.

MIKE. Hi, Oelwein! I’m Mike O’Malley. Glad to meet you.

Thief starts the truck, loaf of bread still on the passenger seat.

MIKE. Hey!

Fade to Javert.

JAVERT. My name is Javert. Annie Javert. Waterloo Police Department. The story you are witnessing is true. Be alert to the facts. In the coming weeks, your cooperation will be appreciated as I track down a vicious murderer and thief. His name is Mike O’Malley, and it is my sworn duty to apprehend him, no matter what the cost. No matter how far into the heart of America I must search to find the man who stole three hundred and eleven dollars and thirty-seven cents and a loaf of bread from the Waterloo Maid-Rite, and ruthlessly murdered Old Jake, the manager.

The trail of Jake’s assassin led me to Oelwein. I decided to visit Pat Ramsey, the chief of police there. She was in the middle of a murder investigation.

Fade to Ramsey and Roger and the farmer’s dead body.

RAMSEY. So, you were the one who found the body?

ROGER. Yep. I was the one who found him. He was dangling at the end of a chain attached to the back of a moving semi.

RAMSEY. And that’s how you found him?

ROGER. Yep. I pulled alongside and waved the driver over.

RAMSEY. Is the semi driver still around?

ROGER. No, he went on his way. Poor guy had no idea there was a dead body strapped to his rig.

RAMSEY. I see. Did you happen to get his name.

ROGER. He said it, but I don’t remember. Seemed like a really nice fella. Only had one arm. He was really shook up when he saw the body.

Javert enters.

JAVERT. Hi, Pat.

RAMSEY. Hello, Annie. What brings you to Oelwein?

JAVERT. I’m on a case. What’ve you got here?

RAMSEY. Possible homicide.

JAVERT. How did he die?

RAMSEY. Looks like homicidal dragging.

ROGER. Or else a heart attack.

JAVERT. Do I know you from somewhere?

ROGER. No, ma’am.

RAMSEY. Was there any sign of a motive?

ROGER. Well, I tell you, it seems his pick-up truck was stolen today while he was over at the diner.

RAMSEY. Any witnesses?

ROGER. Just the waitress at the diner. She said he was waiting for a guy named Mike O’Malley and--

JAVERT. Mike O’Malley!!

ROGER. Did I pronounce it wrong?

Fade to Mike and a girl in a car.

GIRL. Can you tell me again where we’re going?

MIKE. My loaf of bread was stolen.

GIRL. We’ve been driving for an hour and I’m about out of gas.

MIKE. Just follow that pick-up truck.

GIRL. Okay.

Fade to Javert.

JAVERT. Mike O’Malley. Murderer. Thief. A serial killer who’s brutal senseless crimes have cut a bloody swath across two counties. I know he’s out there somewhere. And I’ll find you O’Malley. If it’s the last thing I do.

AUTHOR'S NOTES:
This episode was actually written by Jeff Goode
Brass Link was a No Shame serial created by Sean Clark and Jeff Goode. The two writers alternated episodes with no pre-planning of the direction of the series. Each new episode required the current writer to pick up wherever the other had left off. Recurring roles were usually played by the same actors from week-to-week, though the part of Roger, notably, was played by three different actors.
