Some kind of southern gothic Highway blues Some kind of southern gothic Highway blues No matter which way I go I seem to always lose Turkey vultures in the ditches Picking away at the bones I'm looking for some new stitches Farmers just can't keep their homes (Bridge) Picket fences, casting shadows Along red river drive Another mockingbird on the gallows Another dead man alive Some kind of southern gothic Highway blues Some kind of southern gothic Highway blues Shotgun wedding with the devil Resistance is no use Ravens perched up in a dead tree Banshees singing sweet lullabies Some folks go digging to get free Some folks go digging through the lies (Bridge) Every town, has secrets to yield Cannibalistic cattle They found a body in the cornfield The earth began to rattle Some kind of southern gothic Highway blues Some kind of southern gothic Highway blues Scarecrows wave as I drive by I'm leaving the car in cruse Pistol Marry grabs the waiter Puts his head through the wall You know she used to be a good Quaker But one day she got a phone call (Bridge) Bitter paranoia, sinking in A canary bird cries Worms underneath your river skin The flowers crumble but the weeds survive Some kind of southern gothic Highway blues Some kind of southern gothic Highway blues No matter which way I go I seem to always lose

AUTHOR'S NOTES:
This song helped me a lot in figuring out where I was going with this crazy series. It was around the time, late into the summer of 2000, that I decided to make it some kind of musical or crazy experimental opera. It helped set a tone and brought a background world for all that follows to take place in, hinting on realistic problems in our world in a kind of surreal way. Before the theme song (which is really called Southern Gothic Highway Blues but sounds funny next to Southern Gothic Highway Blues selective Works Part 1.) most of the songs were just ballads, self-contained stories. I originally envisioned it being like a series of campfire stories, but after this song I began to bring it all together into a kind of supernatural apocalyptic love story, returning from the dead to be hunted by the past. Why these are selective works is because a week or so before performing I decided to continue to pursue making this into a musical. Hopefully it will not take another four years to complete.
