LIGHTS OUT

by Adam Burton and Ben Schmidt

LIGHTS OUT. THIS ENTIRE PIECE IS PERFORMED IN THE DARK.

LITTLE LIGHT GUY stands centerstage. He turns his light on and off repeatedly, saying "little light goes on.... little light goes off..."

STRANGER enters silently in the darkness in a long black trenchcoat. May occasionally be illuminated by the little light, but never quite in LLG's field of vision. STRANGER creeps furtively, ominously around the stage, tacking toward the LLG. STRANGER also has a light which he may turn on and off when LLG won't be able to see it.

STRANGER creeps up right behind LLG, touches him on the shoulder. LLG jumps, making STRANGER jump, they both shout and frantically point their lights at each other. Long pause, standoff. Finally STRANGER reaches slowly into his coat pocket and pulls out a little bag.

STRANGER (offering bag to LLG): Cheese curds?

Both flashlights go out. HOLD FOR FOUR BEATS, then LIGHTS UP.

"Lights Out" debuted February 13, 1998 performed by Adam Burton and Ben Schmidt.
