LIGHTS UP. ADAM wanders in from stage right looking beat, a coat slung over his shoulder, dragging a backpack on the ground behind him by a strap that has come loose at one end. Goes centerstage, downstage-ish, then crouches down to take a break, looks left and right as if at a road. Stands, waits. After a pause, the sound of a car approaching is heard. ADAM becomes alert when he hears it, looks off into the stage right distance in anticipation, holding out his thumb, tracking the approach of the car with his thumb and his gaze.

As the car approaches, the noise gets louder, and just as ADAM's gaze reaches centerstage...

VOICE FROM CAR: AS IF!

Sound of car speeding away into the distance, as ADAM looks a bit taken aback. He recovers his composure and waits for the next car. Pause. Peers into the distance, looks away, looks back, mind wanders. Then sound of approaching car is heard. As before, ADAM holds out thumb, car approaches. When at centerstage...

VOICE FROM CAR: PISS OFF!

Sound of car speeding away into the distance. ADAM is disgruntled. Waits for next car. Pause. When sound of approaching car is heard, he starts to stick out his thumb, then waves his hand in a "screw that" gesture. Tracks car intently with his eyes until it approaches centerstage. For a split second we hear someone in car starting to laugh at ADAM.

ADAM (very fast in the brief window where he can be heard by the vehicle's occupants): FUCKYOU!

ADAM tracks car with his glare. Sound of car receding turns into screeching of brakes.

VOICE FROM CAR (very angry): HEY!!!

ADAM registers this turn of events in quick stages, going from the glare to wide-eyed stare. Car engine revs a couple of times loudly as if preparing to come back. ADAM's expression turns to "oh shit!" as car engine noise gets louder/closer. He grabs his stuff and dashes away in the direction from whence he came.

BLACKOUT.
