"Was You Were And Will You Won’t?"

(Lights down. Lights up on Dan, sitting in chair reading book. Before the spoken part of the piece, Dan will do a series of wordless movements. In order, they are: The Fishhook Thing, the Bird Thing, and the Marionette Thing. They are not nearly as good as anything a real silent comic would create. That’s the point. It’s convenient when your points require that you are not as good at things as other people.)

Question:

Who is

(was)

Who is (was)

the greatest silent comic

ever?

Who is (was)

the greatest silent comic

ever?

And I say

Buster.

Buster Keaton is (was)

the greatest silent comic

ever.

Buster was

indomtable

Buster was

inimitable

Buster was not

inevitable.

He did not have to

be.

He does not have to

be.

So what I want to ask him is

"Buster,

Is you is

Or is you ain’t?"

And tomorrow,

when you wake

up,

I suggest you look in your mirror

And ask yourself

Is you is

Or is you ain’t.

(Snap fingers. Immediate blackout.)
