I didn't mind the vomiting sketch. I really didn't. I honestly didn't think
it was that unnecessary. It's been a long time since anybody at No Shame did
anything along those lines.

Really tiny capsule review: The Al Snow sketch sucked eggs. Aprille Clark is
starting to really impress me as both a writer and a performer, and this is
saying a lot, since I had such a heavy bias against her when she first started.
Ben Schmidt needs an agent. Speech Impediment Theater was disgustingly funny.
Grace also impressed me quite a bit. Mose Hayward's sketch, alas, just wasn't
all that amusing, but was it meant to be? I couldn't tell. This will probably
suffice for now.

Everybody must go to the ten minute play festival. It is the second third and
fourth in the theatre "B", and is exorbitantly priced at $3 for students, and a
whopping $5 for not-a-students. I have a thing there. Dan and Mike Cassady
and Chris Stangl have a thing there. Four other swell folks who don't do NS
regularly also have a thing there, including former board member Sarah Greer.
See the amazing antics of such beloved NS actors as Neil "Balls" Campbell,
Arlen Lawson, Kyle Lange, Kehry Anson Lane, Aaron "Stubble" Galbraith, Mark
Hansen, Chris Okiishi, and the terrifying miss Sheila "Badeila" Franklin

Mar 6, 2000 20:23 from Stubble
sketches have gone over before, many, many times. that doesnt make it right
though, but nonetheless if the audience really enjoys it, they tend to forgive
pieces that are longer. stangl has gotten away with many an eight or nine
minute monologue. ive only seen two people get cut off in the last two years,
one sort of started doing a second piece after the first one, and the other was
just really long and had failed to get the audience involved from the start.
so there you have it, i dont encourage a lengthy piece, as that is usually a
problem at no shame, so choose wisely, or me and my friends will rush the stage
and shove a feather duster up your ass.

Not much more I can add to Stubble's excellent advice, other than as a rule of
thumb, 1 page=1 minute. Gage wisely. If it's really long, it can be split
into two pieces performed on separate weeks, which has been done before with
great success. Welcome, in any event!

Another FAQ, why do we need to turn in our script?
I can guarantee you mine won't be any ofthe ists (rac-,sex)
but you don't censor the content, right. Are there groumds for not
allowing a sketch to go on, be edited? Have you had probs in past?
Do we get that back, or is it part of the No Shame archive?
[No Shame> msg #8608 (32 remaining)] Read cmd -> Next

Mar 7, 2000 09:00 from Ender

Scripts aren't even read before the show starts (who has time??), so there's
definitely no censoring. You can do all the -ists you like; all you have to
deal with is the fact that there are in the range of 150 people watching you do
them. Your call. (You can always leave it to them to wonder if it's you or
your character talking, right?)

Scripts are turned in for three reasons:
(no wait, four reasons):
1) So the person announcing the order has something from which to copy the
title/author info, if their first attempt to write it out during hte mad rush
of script submissions was less than legible.
2) So the person in the booth has something to refer to when running lights for
the piece.
3) So pieces can be reviewed when it comes time to pick some for Best of No
Shame (and so they have your phone number: PUT YOUR PHONE NUMBER ON YOUR
SCRIPTS, FOLKS)
4) For the archives.

Mar 7, 2000 09:05 from Whitewolf

Off the top of my head, some reasons for turning in a script: the board knows
you actually wrote something in advance and aren't just planning to get up
there and blither for 10 minutes, which has definitely been more of a problem
in the past than -ist content. The person operating lights uses your script to
determine when the lights go up and down for your piece. They're useful for the
person writing down the order, and they're useful afterwards to reconstruct the
order, and they're particularly useful at the end of the semester when the
board's trying to put together a Best Of docket and they're trying to remember
who wrote that one really funny piece, you know, about the squid taco and the
leprous leprechaun. Also, in my experience there's never time to read the damn
things beforehand to determine whether they're -isty and should be censored (as
if) but it's not too hard to look at a script and notice that it's 20 pages
long and likely to violate the 5-minute rule.

Back in the day, people routinely turned in scripts hand-scrawled on a
ripped-out sheet of notebook paper, mostly consisting of random notes about the
vague gist of what they were going to do. A typed script, IMHO, implies
preparation and at least a modicum of thought beforehand, which probably on
average leads to better theater. Spontenaity is great if you're talented enough
to pull it off, but not everyone is.

Well, it was a bold, persistent group, albeit small. Even a few folks
(non-performers) who showed up thinking it was a regular No Shame night. Which
it was, minus most of the audience and keys to Theatre B. (That's for the
record, Jeff--this show took place in the lobby.) Anyway, without further ado,
the order. All pieces performed by author unless otherwise noted.

1) "Spring Break? What's That?" by Chris Okiishi
performed by Chris Okiishi and Adam Burton
2) "You Take the High Road, I'll Take the Blow" by Nick "I Don't Really
    Do Coke" Clark
3) "Book Truck Fever" or "Disco While Getting Paid" by James Erwin
4) "Okay, So I Do Love My Dad After All," by Ben Zolno (a No Shame vet for
those who don't recognize the name; just swinging through town and
    decided to drop in)
5) "May Glove to Me" by Aprille Clarke
6) "Still Pootin' After All These Years: A Tribute to Paul
Simon" by Chris Stangl and Jamal River

Clearly the best way to be assured a spot in the order is to go when there's
not officially a show. :) Maybe we should start doing impromptu Saturday

To the twenty or so of you that showed up, kudos heaped on kudos. You're

My personal and very, very important review:
1) Hilarious all the way through. Niiiice. And now I'm really mad that we've
never heard Adam's singing voice before.
2) Nick was really on the mark. His timing is improving immensely.
3) Okay. The lighting cues were completely absent, it being the lobby and all.
So I'm surprised this went over well. I think I owe Jamal for that.
4) Top notch monologue. Funny and serious in the right proportions.
5) Aprille has been hitting this note consistently, but she hits it better than
anyone I know.
6) Old school Chris and Jamal. "That's not an old man! That's a gigantic pile
of sloth poo!" "I don't care! I will make the sweet love to it anyway!" Heehee.

There are lots of great pieces that involved music that come to mind that
weren't specifically songs, although I know they won't work for a CD. (Megan's
Curious George piece, the domestic abuse music/dance/acting piece Marc Slayton
put together years ago--with chanting and flute music, the piece Eric Johnson

accompaniment that occasionally broke into the wild music, to which Doug danced

I'm telling you, Mike Cassady is beautiful. But Mike, you need to work on your
musical talent just a tad. Okay, like a lot. Good lyrics though.

Ben Schmidt is beautiful. He's probably some guy who would take a chick for a
really long walk by the river and talk about hopes and dreams and other
bullshit like that. Does he have a CD out or what? I have gay male friends
who need material for their spank banks. Damn, I bet everyone would be in love

I WANT TO SEE NEW PERFORMERS, DAMNIT! Honestly, I am sick of seeing the same
guy in fucking 4 or 5 skits in one night, unless it is Mike Cassady, Balls, or

okay, friskee i agree with you that mike's piece left something to be desired
on friday, but i must refute a few other points you made regarding mister
cassady. first and foremost, he is not beautiful, nor could he ever dream of
being beautiful or being with someone beautiful during this lifetime.
secondly, he is indeed very musically talented. mike is a very accomplished
trumpet player, pianist, and composer in the school of music. he has only been
playing guitar for a few months, and even though i, being his roommate, have to
listen to him twang on that blasted instrument (the guitar) two or three times

I have no doubt as to Cassady's musical ability. I thoroughly enjoyed his
little piece last Friday. If only he would have sang it to the trumpet
though...

And Mr. Aaron, you are wrong. Mike Cassady *IS* in fact beautiful. I would
dare venture to say hot, but I'm only saying this because I know that he
will probably be either blushing or laughing at the thought of him being
hot.

Mike Cassady *IS* going to end up with someone absolutely gorgeous. It's kind
of like how David Spade dates all the beautiful super models, no?

Mike Cassady is remarkable. Mike Cassady delights the senses. Mike Cassady is
highly excellent. Mike Cassady can speer ducks floating down the Iowa River
from the IMU bridge. Mike Cassady gives intense aesthetic pleasure to the
mind. Mike Cassady is beautiful in a form that is rarely used for a man.

Mr. Aaron, I bet you get to see Cassady when he wakes up in the
morning/afternoon. That in itself is beauty. You should cherish every moment
spent with him, as he may soon kick you out onto the streets in front of
Currier like yesterday's DI and old banana peels, forever banishing your from
the Currier E200's.

Hmm. Not only have I seen Ben Shmidt without his shirt on, but without any

I thought it was kind of cool of him to join Carolyn in her nakedness though.

Actually, the brilliant thing about Carolyn's nudity was that she WASN'T a
"naked chick" on stage. At first it was just startling (ohnigod Carolyn's
naked) but after just a few minutes of Carolyn acting completely herself as if
Carolyn naked was just Carolyn, it just quit being an issue. Several people
had asked her to be in their pieces that night not knowing that she wouldn't be
wearing any clothes during the show, and she just played the roles as she would
have on any other night. And the best was her monologue which was a great
monologue as was her tradition, and had quite simply nothing to do with nudity.

Apr 4, 2000 16:58 from Carolyn
Well, I did sell out at one point and put my clothes back on to be in John
Smick's piece. He had invited a coworker and was doing a piece for her, and
thought she would be offended by Naked Me, so asked me if I'd put my dress back
on. And I did. Just for his piece. And the coworker hadn't even showed up,
it turns out.

Glad y'all liked it. And Adam's right--the point was about trying to do
something different with nudity than just the shock element. So the evening
started with a chase sketch during Megan's intro. where I chased Smick and JC
across the stage, naked and carrying a box of Frosted Flakes as a weapon. But
then as the order was still being read, the three of us came out from behing
the curtain, as if the joke was over and we were all just taking our
seats--except that I was naked. And then just going on with the rest of the
evening as if nothing were going on.

Which kind of worked. I think there was one line of a piece of Ben's that I
was in that took on some kind of double meaning as a result, but I think people
also actually heard parts of the monologue, which was kind of the test.

I was running lights that night, which meant that I kept walking past the
maximum number of people every time I had to get on stage. (Hmmmm. I'm trying
to remember the funny thing Rob Frisch said to me in the light booth. Can't
remember.) And then Ben came to the light booth and stripped down. Which was
not the worst part of the evening . . .

Actually, I was running lights that night, can't quite remember why, and I must
say I didn't have to fake my look of surprise when Smick and JC came running
across stage as if being chased, and then Carolyn came jogging after. (I had
been warned something would happen, but had no specific clues.) And naked Ben
sat by me, so no, that wasn't the worst part of the night.. (Not that Ben
naked was a rare sight in those days, given his moonlighting as a model for
figure drawing class.)

I'm sorry:

1) That Stubble is mad at anyone, or feeling any neagive emotion really,
although anger CAN be quite healing, if properly used, and hence not
necessarily negative, but never-the-less, I weep for his pain.

2) That anyone is mad a Mr. Cassady, as that really can't be too pleasant,
espcially given Stubble's particular emotive gifts, and Mr. Cassady's gentle
 and effervesent nature.

3) That I cannot spell worth a damm...er, mn.

4) That I was foolishly studying for medical boards instead of attending No

5) That James Erwin's store closed. Although, if this means more No Shame
appearences, than I welcome his temporary un-employment. James--wanna be in my

Captain Tact> No Shame has varied in its popularity at the U of I. I'm not
sure exactly how many people show up each week now, but there have been some
very dry periods as well as some very fecund periods--where we were filling the
148-seat house easily and turning people away every week.

One things that NS at Iowa has going for it is that Iowa is a big school. So
the percentage of people who know about NS is probably pretty small, but given
the overall numbers, that still means a sizable audience.

I've seen versions of NS run at smaller schools--namely St. Ambrose University
in Davenport and Alfred University in update NY--and in both cases the format
was modified a bit because given the smaller populations it was going to be
harder to bring in the same number of writers (a different but equally
important consideration from audience numbers). At St. Ambrose, they did away
with the originality rule, and so people could come and read things by other
people. And at Alfred, they had a core group of writers who wrote much of the
show--as well as a special guest each week--often a faculty member--who wrote
some things on his or her own. I think they also allowed non-original work.

What has been key at Iowa, I think, is that there is a large theater
department. No Shame has often (but not always) drawn quite heavily from that
population. And one of the ideas behind the timing of the show each week (11
PM) is that theater folks can come to it following Friday night rehearsals.
(St. Ambrose has a small theater group which is the core of the NS-like group,
and at Alfred, it's really an English Dept. thing, I think.) The NS board
serve as organizers rather than key creators--at least in theory--at Iowa,
although during rough periods (with low attendance/few writers) the group
running the show has really upped its level of commitment as far as the writing
goes. (Think of Megan Gogerty and friends making sure there were a reasonable
number of sketches each week during 94-5 or so.)

Current attendance at NS here at Iowa has been pretty good in recent years,
weather permitting. In fact, in the past three semesters, we haven't had need
to even advertise, other than for Best Of, which is pretty remarkable. Don't
always sell out, and momentum has been lost at times (re: SPACE PLACE), but
the audience has worked to find us, and not often gone away disappointed. Give
it a go!
